Blog #69

For the last blog, answer these questions:

1. What project do you think taught you the most this semester?
The access projects. I never knew that there was so much you could actually do.

2. How do you like blogging? Do you plan to continue with your blog eventhough I'm not going to be posting topics for you to blog about?
I don't particularly like sharing my thoughts on the internet, so no, I don't plan to continue blogging.

3. What did you learn from the Coffee Geek Squad project? What changes do I need to make?
I liked the project, but I think you shouldn't hold students accountable for SA days.

4. Did the snacks that I brought influence you to do your work and behave appropriately (better work ethic = higher paycheck)?
Definately.

5.Business Plan: Was it helpful to watch the Peter Perfect episodes throughout the semester? Did they teach you anything? Do you think you will use your plan to start your own business one day?

6. Any other comments?
Nice having you as a teacher Ms. Gay even though I could be quite a pain at times. ;p

Why do students fight at school knowing the consequences? What should happen to a student that injures a teacher?

Some students just don't care. Others are provoked to the point that they feel like thay have no other options. I don't think it's right for a student to injure a teacher purposely; there should definately be some severe consequences (i.e. going to alternative school).

What's the worst & best customer service you've ever received at a business?

Well I'm very particular about how I'm treated at a business. The WORST customer service I've ever experienced was at the Chili's in Tifton. They waitress had an attitude, it took forever for the food to come, and when it came it looked as if it had been sitting for a while. She better be glad we had a party of 8 or more (gratuity added into the check) or she wouldn't have gotten anything from me but a call of complaint.
The BEST customer service I've ever experienced was when I went to get a Homecoming Court dress. It was in Waycross at A Touch of Love Bridal. The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. I quickly found a dress that I liked after she and her employees made some suggestions as to which dresses would fit me best based on my body type. It was such a good experience that I went back for prom. I'd recommend this place for anyone seeking formal attire.

Graduation can't get here fast enough. I'm in a pessimistic kind of mood so excuse the tone of this passage. I'm sick to DEATH of Coffee High and the things that come along with it (students, faculty, etc). I won't miss this every day. Coming to class overloaded with busy work, and teachers rushing through lesson plans, not thoroughly covering the material and making the students pay for it just because they're trying to meet "quotas." It's ridiculous. Student athletes not getting the opportunity to establish themselves as some of the greatest talent to come through Coffee High because some parent with "benefits" is overstepping authority. Horrible school food, totalitarian atmosphere, no privileges, nothing. I mean who would want to learn under these conditions? Students who've spent 12 or more years in high school get to the second semester of their senior year and are informed that they won't be able to walk across the field with the rest of the class they grew up with. All b/c of quotas.. trying to meet quotas.. not realizing the true damage it's causing. I'm SO glad I only have less than a week left here.

Miss California's answer cost her -- $200,000 crown, scholarship $$, apartment in NYC (Trump Tower) for a year, annual salary, fame, and many more opportunities. She became 1st Runner up with Miss North Carolina taking the Miss USA title. Regardless of your views on homosexual marriage, would you have stated your belief even if you knew it would cost you one of the judge's vote?

I would have been completely honest when expressing my views, but at the same time I wouldn't have been tactless. Miss California did right be honestly telling the judges what she thought, and peace of mind, in my opinion, is much better than material things. I commend her for that.

Well I had planned to freewrite on Michael Jackson again since that's what I did last time we had the opportunity to write about whatever we wanted to and since there was an article about him on MSN, but now that this "sub" has thoroughly ticked me off, my subject for to today has changed. I will now write about why teachers shouldn't be subs. Well for one, I don't think they should b/c some teachers come in and apply their own rules/work despite the lesson plans. For instance, I was in math class one day, and our very lovely sub, since she herself had been a so-called math teacher, made us do our work the way SHE thought we should do it, despite what we had told her and what the teacher had said. That is SO unnecessary. And today in this class. I was rereading the Michael Jackson article I had read this morning on MSN so I could do my blog, and that sub tapped into my computer and closed out everything, including my blog. I mean, first off, it wasnt like I was on a game or anything; I only had the article and my blog up. Then second off, he didn't even bother to ask me what I was doing or if it was necessary for me to have that open to complete the assignment; he just exited off and deleted my almost-complete blog. Completely unnecessary. And then teachers and other adults wonder why some students respond to them in the ways they do. So, to keep a conflict for brewing, I just decided instead to lay my head down until the next teacher came in. I'm so ready for the economy to get back on track so they can actually afford to pay subs again. I know that won't happen before I graduate, but still, I know there are students behind me who feel the same way.

Did you see the snow yesterday?!? It was quite the shock. I wore flip flops Saturday then get out of church Sunday morning to snow. Howbeit it, it didn't stick and was random throughout the afternoon, but it was still snow!

Also, due to the fact that I went home with some family & friends for Sunday lunch, I didn't get a chance to make the buttercream icing for the cupcakes. So, the cupcakes will have to wait until Wednesday since tomorrow is a hectic day with the SACS team on campus.

No, I stay far, far away from cold weather. I stayed in my room under a blanket texting all yesterday. Snow doesn't amaze me like it does some people; I've never seen it before, and I could go my whole life w/o doing so.

Personally (along with a lot of other teachers, admin, and students) I am sick of the smoking in the bathroom. How can any of you stand to even go in the restrooms? There is no way to "air" them out either. CHS is a smoke-free campus and that will never change due to state and federal regulations. Knowing this, what solution do you have for stopping the smoking in the restrooms?

I don't think locking the bathrooms is a very smart approach. I mean, what's the purpose of having them if they're not going to be used. I don't really know what they can do. Maybe we could go back to the bathroom monitor thing.

I'm sooo sick of my 3rd block; it puts me in a bad mood coming to this class everyday. The teacher gives us impractical amounts of work. Like, for example, she gave us a 24-problem worksheet (which was technically 48 problems b/c we had to work them all twice) as a warm-up (yes, that's right, a WARMUP) before 2nd lunch which only gave us 30 minutes to finish it. Then, she went over problems for 20 minutes after lunch, and after that, she gave us a test that she expected us to finish in 40 minutes. 40 MINUTES. And on top of that, she doesn't really go over what we're supposed to do. I mean she'll give us the basics, but then she'll give us worksheets over problems that are 10'xs as complex that she hasn't even attempted to go over. I think I'm going to go see Mrs. Williams after 1st block tomorrow so I can get out of there. I absolutely HATE that class.

I think Phelps, as well as the US Olympic Committee, handled this situation appropriately. Phelps took responsiblilty for his actions and outwardly apologized. I think this is the way all situations like this should be handled instead of passing immediate judgment as if you haven't ever made a mistake before.

Well I couldn't really think of anything to write about so I went to MSN for some type of inspiration. The first thing I saw was an article about Michael Jackson. I absolutely adore Michael Jackson as a musician. I think he is one of the best musical talents in history. I mean, technically speaking, he is. He still holds the record of having the best selling album in the world, and this album was released almost three decades ago. Nobody has come CLOSE to competing with selling 100 million copies (the closest have been The Eagles with an astounding, yet paradoxically meager, 42 million). Michael has been a major pioneer of many modern genres of music, from rock to pop to R&B, and his influence even expounds to Broadway. When I logged on to MSN, the first thing I saw was that Thriller (whether the album or single, I'm not exactly sure) is coming to Broadway. That would be the most amazing thing; I'd pay any amount to see that performance, especially since Michael himself is supposed to have a hand in its production. I'm a HUGE Michael Jackson fan; his abilities as an artist, performer, and musician are extraordinary. How his image has been damaged behind the scandals doesn't affect my opinion of his music. It includes some of the most incredible pieces of work I've ever heard in my life, and believe me I listen to A LOT of different music, not just the typical R&B and Hip-Hop. By far, though, Michael Jackson is one of the best ever. Since I probably won't ever have the privilege of seeing him perform live, I hope this Broadway performance comes to Jacksonville so I can at least witness the reinactment first hand.

Besides the fact that people who eat breakfast are more productive throughout the day, this 2008 study on www.mrbreakfast.com reveals another aspect. Read the quote and then write a response on your blog.
A study from the University of Minnesota indicated that teens who skip breakfast are more likely to become obese than those who routinely eatbreakfast. Over the five-year span of the study, those who skipped breakfastwere on average five pounds heavier than their breakfast-eating peers.

I don't like statistics b/c they aren't really practical representations b/c only a select number of people are surveyed. But I can believe this one, however, because if I skip breakfast, I tend to eat alot more during the day and later into the night.

Read the article below and then analyze the situation in a one paragraph response. State your opinion on the game.

I understand that this is a Christian school, but this isn't rec league basketball. The girls are out there to do a job, and if a team gets humiliated by a score (and has been winless for the past four seasons by the way), then they should do better at their job. I don't think it's a big deal anyway. You get out there on the court with an understanding that someone has to lose. Point blank. If anyone should have forfeited it should have been the other team, at halftime. I mean, if that team would have tried to be nice about the situation and let the other team score, they could have possibly come back and beat them.

Read the article below. Then, write a paragraph explaining your thoughts on the article. Do you know of teens here in Coffee County that participate in this type activity?

I understand the need to send a message to other minors, but I feel like this is the wrong way to handle this situation. The pictures were sent voluntarily and willingly by the girls involved so I don't think there should be any charges filed against them, especially not the boys. I mean, you can't control what somebody sends you. But since there isn't any proof that this was done at school, and, as I said before, the girls willingly sent the pictures, then technically no rules have been broken so I think they should just leave this alone. And not to mention, having to sign up as sex offenders for the next 10 years b/c of what somebody sends you has to be absolutely humiliating.

&& no I don't know of anyone who does this, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't mean it's not happening.

What is the actual Inauguration? What other events surround the Inauguration? Have you ever been to an Inauguration or know someone that has? I've never been, but Ms. Quenzer typically takes a group of students. My cousin, John Spivey, went to the Bush's Inauguration with her a few years ago. I have been to Washington D.C. before though. If you ever get the chance, you definitely need to visit all the historical sites in DC at least once in your life!

An inauguration is the official swearing in of the upcoming president. There are all types of balls and galas and special events during this time. I've never been and don't plan too; it's wayyy too cold during that time.

Sitting too close to the television, opening you eyes in chlorine water, getting harful substances in your eye (i.e. soap, bleach)

What's your favorite TV show? What's so great about it?

House! It's really interesting, especially since I want to go into the medical field one day. I love the main character, Dr. House, b/c of his sarcasm and unethical practices; it makes the show entertaining. My favorite part is when they discover the diagnosis at the end of the show.
